Most guests who ask about Mount Athos have already looked it up. They know it exists, they know it's a monastery peninsula an hour from the resort, and they know it's unusual. What they don't always know is how to actually get there, or what happens when they do.

This is not a travel-writing piece. It's what we tell people at the front desk.

Who Can Visit

Only men. This rule — the avaton — has been in place since the Byzantine era and is still enforced by Greek law. Women are not permitted to set foot on the peninsula.

Orthodox Christian men need a recommendation letter from a church or bishop alongside the permit. Non-Orthodox men can also visit, though the daily quota is much smaller (10 non-Orthodox vs. 100 Orthodox per day). Either way, you apply in advance.

If you're travelling as a couple or family, the women in your group can join a boat excursion along the coastline — you can see several of the monasteries clearly from the sea. Our concierge can arrange this.

The Permit (Diamonitirion)

You cannot get on the ferry without one. The diamonitirion is issued by the Mount Athos Pilgrim's Bureau in Thessaloniki:

Egnatia Street 109, Thessaloniki
Monday to Friday, 09:00–14:00

Apply in person, bring your passport and (if Orthodox) your recommendation letter. The summer months fill up fast — apply as early as you can.

If you want help coordinating the timing with your stay, our concierge handles this regularly. Email us at reservations@mountathosresort.com before you arrive.

Getting There from Ierissos

The pilgrimage ferry to Mount Athos departs from Ierissos harbour every morning. The resort is five minutes on foot from the pier — which is the main reason many pilgrims base themselves here. You walk to the ferry, not arrange a transfer.

The crossing to the monastery coast takes roughly two hours. Check the current departure schedule with the resort when you book — times shift between seasons.

What to Bring

  • Your diamonitirion (the original, not a photo)

  • Passport

  • Long trousers, covered shoulders — this is required, not suggested

  • Cash — there are no ATMs on the peninsula

  • Water and something to eat for the journey

On the Mountain

A standard diamonitirion is valid for four days and covers both access to the peninsula and overnight stays in the monasteries themselves — you arrange accommodation directly with whichever monastery you plan to visit. Some accept walk-ins; most prefer prior contact.

The 20 ruling monasteries each run on their own schedule. If you arrive unannounced at the wrong time, you wait. That's part of the experience.

Photography is permitted in the outer grounds of most monasteries. Inside the churches, usually not — ask before you raise your phone.

The pace is completely different from anywhere you've been in Greece. No cafés, no noise, no commerce. Monks have lived here in more or less the same way for over a thousand years.

When You Return

The afternoon ferry brings you back to Ierissos. Many guests extend their stay by a night or two after the visit. A day on the Holy Mountain tends to make people quieter, and Ierissos is a good place to sit with that.

Dinner at Leuko Kochili Tavern, something cold, the Aegean in the evening — it works.
